The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey issued the following news release:
Yanal Kazan, 60, of Kinnelon, N.J., was indicted by a federal grand jury today on five counts of filing false income tax returns from 2003 through 2005, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
According to documents filed in this case:
Kazan engaged in business as a chiropractor, with offices at 470 Chamberlain Ave., Paterson, N.J., through various entities he owned and operated, including Chiropractic Health Associates Inc.; Chiropractic Healing Arts P.C.; and Yanal Kazan, DC, PC, d/b/a/ Neck & Back Injury Center. Kazan received checks, which were income derived from his chiropractic business activity, issued by insurance companies, lawyers, and other parties.
Kazan and others acting under his direction cashed checks that were income from his chiropractic business activity at a check cashing business in Paterson. Between March 2004 and April 2006, Kazan filed false business tax returns for 2003 and 2004 and false personal tax returns for 2003, 2004, and 2005. His 2003 and 2004 business tax returns reported gross receipts of $71,559 and$91,110, respectively, and did not include gross receipts derived from Kazan's chiropractic business activity of $414,703.84 and $227,297.86, respectively. His 2003, 2004, and 2005 personal tax returns reported losses or zero income from his chiropractic business activity and did not state that his business income in those years was $295,083, $96,589, and $38,611, respectively.
Each of the false filing counts of the Indictment carries a maximum potential penalty of three years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of IRS - Criminal Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Victor W. Lessoff, with the investigation leading to today's Indictment.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney J Fortier Imbert of the U.S. Attorney's Office Special Prosecutions Unit in Newark.
The charges and allegations contained in the Indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
