April 12, 2010 — As of Jan. 1, 2010, CPT Code 29220 (strapping of low back) has been deleted. According to the American Medical Association’s CPT 2010 Professional Edition, CPT Code 29799 (unlisted procedure, casting or strapping) should be used to report low-back strapping.

When reporting an unlisted code to describe a procedure or service, be sure to submit supporting documentation along with the claim, to provide an adequate description of the nature, extent and need for the procedure, as well as the time, effort and equipment necessary to provide this service.

The ACA’s Coding and Reimbursement Committee is the association’s No. 1 resource for coding and billing. This committee creates the ACA’s Chiropractic Coding and Compliance Manual, develops coding clarifications and answers member questions about coding and billing. Many coding questions are addressed on ACA’s Web site (www.acatoday.org/billing.)

Members who have additional questions may e-mail insinfo@acatoday.org to have them answered by the Coding and Reimbursement Committee.
