HARRISBURG — The state Attorney General's Office charged a Bartonsville chiropractor with money-laundering and medication fraud Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation into illegal pain killer prescriptions in Luzerne County.

Gary Weissberger, 54, of Stroudsburg, faces up to 62 years in prison and $230,000 in fines and civil penalties if convicted of these charges. Weissberger was released on $10,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing 9 a.m. Wednesday in Luzerne County Central Court. He could not be reached Thursday for comment or to identify his attorney.

Weissberger's alleged conspirator, Wilkes-Barre physician Abdul Hussain, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of criminal attempt to commit Medicaid fraud and state drug law violations and was sentenced in January to three to 10 years in state prison.

Weissberger and Hussain in November 2004 began a joint medical and chiropractic business called All Care Pain & Rehab, with offices at 576 Union St. in Luzerne, 651 Wyoming Ave. in Kingston and Route 611 and Fork Street in Mount Pocono, according to an affidavit. Weissberger directed medical billing for All Care Pain & Rehab, reviewing patient files and directing others to bill the state Public Welfare Department's Medical Assistance Medicaid program for various physical therapy services.
