GRAND RAPIDS — A chiropractor who once was an owner of the Greater Lansing Chiropractic Center has pleaded guilty to billing an insurance company for services he did not provide, officials said.

Dan Schultz, 44, who authorities say now lives in California, admitted telling his staff to prepare false documents to submit to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Grand Rapids.

Schultz pleaded guilty Aug. 12 in federal court before U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker, records show.

He faces up to five years in prison and fines. Schultz, as part of his plea, agreed to pay back more than $62,000, prosecutors said. That amount represents the services billed that he never performed, according to prosecutors.

Schultz will be sentenced Nov. 30.

Instead of billing Blue Cross Blue Shield for procedures or treatments he actually provided, prosecutors said, Schultz told employees at the DeWitt Township practice to randomly bill for specific chiropractic services.

The fraud happened between 2003 and 2007, according to court documents.
