A Hopkins chiropractor was fined $40,000 and ordered to take an ethics course and exam for failing to provide sufficient documentation to justify various tests and diagnoses, according to an order last week by the Minnesota Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

The board said Gary Lee Smith Jr. failed to justify the basis for neuro-diagnostic testing for six patients as well as diagnoses of medical conditions in as many as nine patients.

Smith neither admitted nor denied the allegations but agreed to the order's entry.

Smith's license was placed under a stayed suspension for at least two years, and he received two years of probation. If he engages in chiropractic practice or ownership, he agrees to be monitored and accept unannounced inspections, the order said.
